The Importance of History?
As we have studied and are currently studying different types of literature and their impact and importance in history I have often wondered why do we study history? Why it is that history is a core class, and why is it required or held on the same level as the disciplines of math, science, and English? Why is it that we study literature from all different periods of history instead of just focusing on modern works? How does history impact us, or does it? Should history classes be valued at the same level as the subjects of math, science, and English?

History repeats itself time and time again. We have been taught since elementary to learn from our mistakes so that we don't do them again. We study history so that we may know which experiments succeeded and which ones failed. We study the subject so that we know where we come from and the heights that we may achieve if we put our minds to it.
ReplyDeleteExactly Drew, I have learned far more from history than anything else. Why? Because everything is history, and all knowledge had to come from somewhere mostly the past.
DeleteI agree. It is part of our nature to learn from our mistakes; if something doesn't work, try something new. Without our history and the mistakes made and corrected, we wouldn't be where we are today.
DeleteI couldn't agree more, Drew. History does repeat itself quite often, more so than one may know. The more we know about what has happened in the past, the better we can predict what may happen in the future.
DeleteAs Drew said above, the best way to learn is from the past. History teaches us all the mistakes and successes of mankind therefore promoting us to make the correct choices. History is the greatest teacher of mankind and its promoted through every subject of learning.

DeleteI disagree. Every single day people make mistakes. Sometimes people make the same stake twice. Yes, we study history, but we do not actually learn until we make the mistake ourselves.
DeleteWe, as the current generation, need to know what happened in American's history and also need to learn the value of our history. History tends to repeat itself in some way, shape, or form so by learning the history of this beatuiful country, we may be able to prevent some of the past happenings. The knowledge of our past leaders and how they overcame hardships, is most inspirational and allows us to have the goal of greatness.
ReplyDeleteFor how young our country really is, we do have a lot of rich history. Living in America my whole life, it just seems normal to have all of that history as a part of my life, but it is hard to think of the fact that we will be a part of the futures' history.
DeleteWithout history we would maybe still have much of the knowledge that we have today, but we wouldn't understand how it all linked together. We wouldn't be able to see how one equation came after another, or why certain racial terms are deemed inappropriate. I think our minds are too curious to just accept what we are told, so we will always ask the question, "Why?" And in finding the answer, we will always have to look to history.
ReplyDeleteDon't people always say forget about the past and move forward with your life. That is what we should be doing. Why look to the past for the answer when we can find it for ourselves. I agree that we are curious but we should look forward not backward for the answers.
DeleteI personally believe that there is absolutely no reason for us to be studying history. History is the just past events that will never happen again so why worry about them. Maybe if we did not study the past so thoroughly our economy would be better. Maybe we would have flying cars who knows? We need to worry more about what is happening in the modern world and forget about the deeds of ancient people. They are not around anymore and have nothing to do with today.
ReplyDeleteBeing humans, we learn from our mistakes and our successes. By looking into our pasts, we learn what and what not to do in our futures. History is a very important part of our lives that leads us into our future. In school, history should be a core class along side math, science and English. Without history, none of what is being taught in those class would be relevant or discovered.
ReplyDeleteHistory is a vital part of all human life. To know where you came from gives a person a certain amount of pride for thier heritage. Also, as I have said above, we can look at trends from the past to help predict and protect our future.Like what happens when a government gives one man( or woman) too much power, they are going to use it, generally in a negative way. This led to the creation of our system of checks and balances. Little things like theese, most people simply take for granted, but all of them are learned from looking back at history.
ReplyDeleteIt is the first day of eighth grade. It is beginning of September in Salmon, Idaho. You walk into Mr. Born’s class right after lunch. It is 80 degrees outside, the windows are open, and there is a slight breeze going through the room. All you can think about is how bad you want to be outside doing something, and Mr. Born somehow manages to get yr attention for a boring topic of United States History. How does he do it?
ReplyDeleteHe does it with precision. He talks about history in a way that is understandable and entertaining. It is a great quality he has because without knowing history and understanding what our previous leaders did to achieve the Union, we cannot appreciate it. We can look back at the mistakes to plan for a better future. We can, but it does not always work out like that.
The answer to Jordan’s question is yes it is very important to understand and study history. It is why we are here so it is very relevant. However, humans keep making the same mistakes over and over. Some mistakes are preventable because of written literature and the lessons it can teach us. The problem with written literature though is the way it is interpreted. Unfortunately that makes written history have some lesser value.
I won't be saying much what other people haven't already said, but history really is one of the most important things we can know. That being said, studying in school about it isn't quite as important, however it is still key. Everything has an archetype that we go off of. How we act, the things we make, how we survive. If we were unaware of these archetypes, everything we know would cease to exist, as we would have nothing to build off of.
ReplyDeleteI believe we study history so that as individuals we cal learn rom other's mistakes and accomplishments. Could you imagine if we had not learn of where we had originated from, we would have nothing to claim about our identities or our persons. History is used as a lesson and an identity teller
