Alright, so we have been talking a lot about the fight scene in I.M. so I thought it would be ok to talk about some violent themes here. There is a nice quote by Robert A. Heinlein that may cause a bit of a ruckus. It goes like this, “Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.”
Agree? Disagree? GO.
"Talk shit get hit." This quote is simple yet complex. It boils down to every conflict in the world, the simple fact that until a physical form of violence is introduced both parties will continue to go at each other without fearing real consequences. Nothing is more absolute than violence and the eternal death that can arise from it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hunter in that violence is very absolute, yet if one turns to violence to solve something once he or she will never be the same.Take the story of MacBeth for example. He who lives by the sword, will die by the sword.
DeleteViolence is the only way to go. Talking things over just takes forever. Violence is quick and easy. It is done in a flash and if your the dominant party everything goes your way. There are no consequences.
DeleteI completely agree. "Snitches get stitches " author unknown, is another quote to relate. People that talk will antagonize violence and eventually be victim themselves.
DeleteI don't have a specific quote, but the human race has been fighting since the beginning of time. It is basically programmed into our DNA that we either fight for what we want or what we feel is right within this world.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Even in our own lives we fight for what we believe in or what we want. All of the "throw-down Thursdays" were not over nothing. Even though I don't believe that violence isn't always the answer, for some it is.
DeleteI do not disagree, or fully agree either. I would love for the world to be violence free. No wars, no crimes, murders, but sometimes it takes violence to solve specific problems. Yet, violence brings hate into the world and revenge. Those two aspects are emotions we do not want to be known for as a country.

DeleteFor those of us in AP III last year we discussed this theme heavily as our inquiry question for the year was "Is War Necessary?" I have come to the consensus that because human nature has a dual potential for goodness, and the potential for corruption and selfishness that sometimes war or violence becomes unavoidable. These cases are very rare, however, violence or war can be only justified in defense of one's life, liberty, property, or family. So perhaps violence has settle more issues throughout history than any other factor, but does that make it right?
ReplyDeleteI agree, violence is sometimes unavoidable, but it does not make it right. Violence is not a pretty thing, and its not something that people should wish to inflict on others.
DeleteI don't know if I agree that violence has actually "fixed" issues, but definitely settled them. I find it very difficult for individuals in certain situations to not use violence, though. As said before, I do think it really is human nature to fight for your rights. Because not everybody is not always going to get what they want, it is guaranteed that violence will arise sometime.
ReplyDeleteViolence is the greatest and simplest way to solve a problem. The utter embarrassment and destruction of one's enemy resolves any problem. It makes it go completely away. And while it may result in some scratches and bruises it will make a person stronger. Violence is a viable means of solving one's problem no matter the situation. Say someone steals your water, immediately stealing that water back and punching them in the face will prove your dominance over the person and solves the problem. Its just like how America solves the majority of all of our problems. We are the strongest nation in the world so we just take what we want just as is should be.

DeleteI believe violence is a temporary solution to any problem. It never really solves anything, it simply creates more conflicts. This being said, sometimes violence is the only answer due to the evil in humanity. Sometimes, one must stand up for themselves and fight for whatever it is that they are attempting to acquire or keep. Many of these things can also be acquired in a peaceful way though. Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. are prime examples of this as they got what they wanted through nonviolent campaigns. All of humanity could learn a lesson from these two parts of history as violence is a poor solution to almost any problem.
ReplyDeleteAs Americans, if we didn't fight for what we believed in, would would not be here today. We fought for our freedom and independence from Great Britian and just as the African-Americans fought for their freedom from pour discriminate white population. Everyone has a right to fight for what they believe in. If we did not fight people of all races and all religions would be discriminated into extinction. Not only as Americans, but as human beings, fighting for what we believe in is what got us this far in history.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately for our innnocent souls in Mr. Pace's class, we do not have to participate in violent acts everyday. We get to see violence morph all over the world. Why is it that we cannot all get along and function? Why is it that we have a hard time sharing? It is because the acts of violence are the effects from previous actions that were violent.
ReplyDeleteI agree, though I don't think the same will necessarily hold true in the years to come. I agree because over the course of history, it seems to be that the strongest prevailed and was considered right for it. One nation crushing another might settle the issue that caused war between the nations. A simple duel in the street would solve a couple of issues, one of which being the original dispute, the other being a decrease in people who duel in the street.
ReplyDeleteSo is violence good? I would say no. Has it, at times solved issues? Yes.
I believe that violence is not at all an effective way to settle most issues. Granted, that is what many choose to use. The problem is, when to use which. Most people can't understand the situations when to use it, and when they shouldn't. It should only be a last resort option. I train every day of the week to use the most amount of violence as possible on a person in the least amount of time, and I feel that has given me insight on how it should be used. And that statement was wrong anyways, I am trained to know how much violence should be used. Someone pushes me in the hall? I don't snap their elbow, dislocate their shoulder, and collapse their windpipe. If someone pulls a knife on me, that is when I do so, if I can't run.
ReplyDeletePeople may like to believe that violence is unnecessary, but that is false. When people are at ends, usually they can settle their difference without anger, but sometimes that just doesn't work. When words don't work, get to hitting, because it is better to just get it out than to hold it in until you die. Just like in the movie "Anchorman" where everyone gets in a deadly brawl and they all come out happy as could be. Violence is just the answer.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with this. While it is unfortunate, actions do sometimes speak louder than words. Often, war is the only option that will actually resolve issues. This is because figures in history each see their actions as "right", Hitler for example. He believed that his cause was just, and he was conquering the world for the good of Germany.
